Happy International Day of Peace 2007

Hello guys,

I haven't been in communication with you in awhile. Some of you know that I've moved from Turkey to Kuwait and that I hope to be here a long while. So far it's MUCH better than last year. I'm already working hard with the kids in the Model United Nations and I had my students do a project for September 21, 2007 UN Sanctioned International Day of Peace (um...remember that song 'Peace Day Peace Day...') My English classes were tasked with answering the question "What does Peace Mean to you?" in a statement, a poem, or using at least 5 words in a creative way relating to peace. My World History Students were tasked with coming up with a project we can do on Sunday (since Friday is the weekend here) and we will be passing out blue ribbons (like the cancer ones) and they will also make bracelets out of pipe cleaners with peace signs on them. Since I only remembered about this on Tuesday, I feel that the projects actually are come out really well. As soon as I get DSL back, I'll put the pics of their posters up on my blog but, for now, they're on Facebook if you wish to see them. :)

Thinking of you on Peace Day!

Love,

Happy Birthday August Folks....

I have been busy finishing my portfolio, moving out of Boston, visiting family, moving to Turkey, and starting a brand new school year with a brand new system that I was off on the birthday salutations. I sent one to Andy and to Julie for the 26th (?) and the 28th(?). Since I sent one to everyone else here, I thought I'd post theirs too. :)

it's good to see everyone. I haven't had time to catch up on the reunion idea in DC...any more thoughts on that anyone? :)

Peace,
La Peliroja

My update

Hello,
Finally am getting around to sending my "real" update. It's a strange thing to write about your life. Our lives are made up of moments, rather than events, but I'll stick to the basics!
I attended college at a state university in New York where I graduated with a degree in Spanish and Spanish Literature. After college, I returned to Buffalo, not knowing what I was going to do (and broke!). After two years of various jobs: waitressing, office work, painting and substitute teaching I decided I needed to return to school. I initially thought I wanted to teach Spanish, but after substituting, I discovered that doing work that addressing others emotional and spiritual lives was a better fit for me. I returned to school in 1998 for a Masters in Social Work. After my graduate program, I was able to combine my two degrees and worked for about 2 1/2 years in an outpatient mental health clinic, where I worked as a therapist for a mainly Puertorican population, conducting a majority of my sessions in Spanish. It was hard work! The clients often had severe trauma histories and little resources materially and emotionally. Trying to do all that in Spanish was difficult and I often felt depleted. Therefore about 4 years ago (wow! writing this all down makes you realize how time has flown by), I transferred to a more suburban counseling setting and am working with all populations: children, adolescents, adults, families. The change was positive for me as my clients are more able to make changes in their lives. While being a counselor is a good fit for me in so many ways, the work can be emotionally taxing at times, and I wonder if outpatient counseling is something I'll always want to do. I think once you settle into any career, you have times where you are enchanted and energized by it, and times it simple feels like work! I have not used my Spanish in many years, so I am on a personal campaign right now to refresh my skills by reading in Spanish, listening to TV in Spanish and hopefully taking a few classes in the fall.
I did some travelling to Europe in 1998. I was in Spain for 3 weeks and then traveled to other big cities: Paris, Bern, Rome, Venice & Florence. Most of my traveling lately has been in the U.S. I have family who now lives out West. After not feeling the travel bug much over the past few years, I'm starting to feel drawn toward to trip to South America.
I remain in Buffalo, NY where I still have my sister and my neice and nephew, as well as my Dad and stepmom. I have treasured being an aunt and have other nieces and nephews in other places. I'm in a transition place right know, wondering and trying to stay open to the possibility of new changes in my life. I started singing in my church's contemporary band this year. After almost 14 years of not singing in a formal way, it has been challenging but rewarding to rekindle that part of me.
Sage has been in graduate school close by for the past fews years, so I have been lucky to connect with her. I took a trip out to L.A. in February to see Andy. I was such a blast to see him doing his "Hollywood" thing.
So that about does it! Hope all are well and wishing blessings and peace to everyone in their own life journeys.

wow. this might actually work.

so it appears that i may have actually figured out how to use this thing.

what have i been up to. hum ... first and foremost i've been having fun. can't say i've been out there changing the world as much as i would have liked or that i'm really making a difference, but i am enjoying life and tryign to help others enjoy it as much as i can.

after college i had brief stints in chicago and nyc, but have now called los angeles home for about 8 years. i've been fortunate that i found a career that i love and that someone pays me to do it. i run a company for a pair of directors and produce their films and now television shows, though who knows if we'll get any tv shows on next season. last year i had a film out called 'in good company' and this april have a movie coming out called 'american dreamz' which is a cultural and political satire that contains everything from american idol, our current president and a show tune loving terrorist. hopefully you will enjoy.

more importantly i have been married for 2 1/2 years and am the proud dada to a 20 month old son. when i'm not working he more or less runs my life. this also explains why it's taken me so long to post here as my time is not really my own anymore. my wife is from the east coast so she and oliver try and spend as much time as they can in cape cod during the summer. while i miss them dearly, if i'm shooting i'm sort of useless to them anyway.

it's amazing and sad that i can sum up my entire life in hust a few short paragraphs, but i think that about covers it. my biggest hobby outside of family and baby is probably still music. one of the most fun part of producing films for me has been the placement of music in film. we worked with badly drawn boy on 'about a boy' and iron and wine on 'in good company' and it was very cool.

k. think ive babbled enough for one post. glad to reconnect and happy that you are all are well no matter where you are or what you are doing.

day by day. that's all any of us can really handle! love to you all.

also, natalie, i think you put toegther a post in draft, but might not have posted it to the site.

I finally made it.

Dear all,

I finally made it onto this blog. I have a condition that makes me overwhelmed with technology:) at times, so it took me longer than I would have liked to finally make a post. Heather, thank you so much for doing this. I told you I would eventually get to this. You just have to be patient with me!

That being said, I'm not actually going to write much now as I'm a little short of time. But I will follow up shortly and give my life synopsis!

Wishing everyone many blessings in the new year.

Ben & Jerry's Trip January 2005
Ben & Jerry's trip January 2005

La Vida Peliroja

Hello Peace Children,

From what it sounds like, we are all working on one path or other that is very much in line with our 14 and 15-year-old missions. I am not sure what everyone is doing but I had a great conversation with Ms. Sage last nite and I have to say, 14 years has given us quite a road. Here's my brief (and I'm horrible at brief) update:

December 2000-Ms. Sage visited for a New Years Eve party while on her way to her new job in Michigan.
March 2001- left my job of 4 years at International Truck and Engine Corp/formerly Navistar/formerly International Harvester to work in downtown Chicago at Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago so I could get my Masters somewhere in the city...didn't work out.
August 2001-found School for Int'l Training(SIT) TESOL certification class in Chicago 2 blocks from my job...decided to do it and take it to Ecuador. (www.sit.edu)
9/11-evacuated from my 5th floor office, was constantly questioned if I really wanted to leave the country...
Jan. 2002-left for Ecuador to teach English but decided to go somewhere where the pay was higher until I could afford to live and work in Ecuador.
August 2002-left to teach English in Korea-LOVED IT...MET AMAZING PEOPLE. After the year was up, I found out that I had been working illegally (work of my recruiter) and was unable to get a new work visa to work at the 2 universities that wanted me to teach for them.
August 2003-visited with the California Amys on my way back to Seoul, Korea from a visit to Chicago and in time for a heated discussion about the Governator...
October 2003-returned to Illinois...only my parents no longer lived near the city...so I worked at Harvard Junior High School in Harvard, IL as a Bilingual Teacher's Assistant for the Mexican American students. Very difficult situation for ESL students there.
May 2004-accepted into the Masters in Teaching(MAT) Program at SIT.
June 2004-August 2004-I worked at Pahaska Tepee Resort 2 miles East of the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. I'm so glad I did that once! It was so incredibly gorgeous!
August 2004-May 2005-worked hared in the intensive MAT program at SIT to get my public school certification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
March 2005-TESOL Conference was in Ms. Garcia's hometown so I was able to see her beautiful babies again...
June 2005-took part in CONTACT (Conflict Transformation Across Cultures) Peacebuilding seminars I & II over 3 weeks with 72 participants from over 30 countries and only 10 or so were American. (www.sit.edu/contact) The last week was preparation for the online course I'm taking in order to get my Graduate Certificate in Conflict Transformation.
June-August 2005-took coursework necessary for a separate teaching concentration in Spanish. When I graduate next year, I'll have an MA in Teaching ESOL with public school certifcation and Spanish, and there will be a separate certificate in Conflict Transformation (1/2 of an MA).
August-November 2005-I've been fulfilling the student teaching requirement at Brookline High School in Brookline, MA and I have been enjoying every minute of it (no free time yet, though, weekends are reading for my online course.)
November Thanksgiving-going home to Chicago because I haven't seen my family enough in the past year...
December 2005-I will take some time to rest...then I'll visit my uncle in Fort Meyers, FL from the 16th-25th. On the 26th, I embark on a journey--First I go to London for 1 nite and meet my friend there. On the 28th, I leave fore Johannesburg for 1 nite. On the 29th, I leave for Entebbe, Uganda. On the 7th of January, I'll start a 3 week program of peace education with my friend at this NGO:
http://uganda.ded.de/cipp/ded/custom/pub/content,lang,2/oid,2520/ticket,g_u_e_s_t
He and I will travel to Kigali, Rwanda for our Conflict Transformation required seminar from January 24th to February 1st. From there, I couldn't just come right back. I'll visit my friend in Arusha, Tanzania (near Kilamanjaro) and, hopefully, my friend Kakuta who is the guy on the right on this webpage: http://www.maasai-infoline.org in Kenya. I will return by way of circumventing the globe. I will go to Hong Kong for 1 nite and hope to set up interviews with International Schools there. I will then go to Seoul, Korea to visit friends for 2 nites before returning to the states by way of 1 nite in San Francisco. The next day I'll go to Vancouver, Canada for the International School Service--ISS (www.iss.edu) / Council of International Schools--COIS (www.cois.org) recruitment fair in the hopes that I will find a job for September 2006 when I will have my degree...
whew!
That's all for now...peace to you all!
